The Ballad of Jake Spoon
(jason bennett)
This song is kind of a tribute to one of the best books ever written. Jake Spoon is a character from the book 'Lonesome Dove'. Anybody who has read the book or seen the movie with Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Urich will understand. What a classic western!!!!
Riding in from Arkansas, dodging bullets and the law. Six long months on that lonesome trail with Sheriff Johnson on your tail. Full moon rising into Texas town. Lay your horse and your money down. Prayin' to the stars above as you blow into Lonesome Dove. Call him Jake, call him Mr. Spoon. Catch him napping in the afternoon. Gamble, ramble all around. Mr. Jake gonna split this town. Well, them good ol' boys they took you in. Sheltered you from all your sin. But the love of a woman fell at your feet, and by morning you hit the street. Heading west to old San Fran. Escaping everything you can. Lori Darlin' by your side. Promises and dreams far and wide...Call him Jake, call him Mr. Spoon. Catch him napping in the afternoon. Gamble, ramble all around. Mr. Jake gonna split this town. Then one morning in a Kansas town you took a wrong turn that was sorrow-bound. A cloud of regret drifting high and wide. No chance to run no chance to hide. Well, Mr. Jake its been one hell of a ride. Friends and memories by your side. One last nap to lay you down. Mr. Jake gonna split this town.......Call him Jake, call him Mr. Spoon. Catch him napping in the afternoon. Gamble, ramble all around. Mr. Jake gonna split this town....
Inspired by the western, Lonesome Dove, by Larry McMurtry.
