Goodnight Suzanne (Country Version)

(jason bennett)
This is one of the saddest love songs I have ever written. It is about a woman who is not capable of love. Unfortunately this poor soul does exist and every word rings true. She is drenched in ignorance to this day.
Darkness is coming, I can hear it through the breeze
The city’s falling asleep to the cries of the trees

And I can still hear you saying you need time to think it through
I’ve been quietly waiting since that November afternoon
And all I’ve got to say
Is goodnight Suzanne

We walked through the days not knowing the time
Made love through the nights to your poems and rhymes

And I can still hear you saying you need time to think it through
Maybe it’s the stars, or maybe it’s the moon
And all I’ve got to say
Is goodnight Suzanne

Well I gave you the sun and you turned it to rain
And you traded my love for pain
And the pebbles in the sand fall through my hands
And spell out the words “Goodnight Suzanne”

So I’m painting by numbers and connecting the dots
Trying to piece together all the things that we’ve got

But I can still hear you saying you need time to think it through
Just remember all I ever wanted was to give my love to you

And all I’ve got to say is goodnight Suzanne….
