Arthur Lee

(jason bennett)
This song is about a newspaper clipping I saw where an unarmed homeless man was shot down on the street. I changed the name, but kept the story true. Just another example of abuse of power by cowards.
I once knew a man long ago, his name was Arthur Lee. He had no money, he had no home, but he meant a lot to me. Then one summer's day on the street of this unforgiving town, Arthur Lee made a wrong turn and Lord, they shot him down. Goodbye Arthur Lee, I'm sorry for what they've done. Though it always seems to happen when they give a man a gun. Now no one knew the circumstance, although the rumors fly. I know he'd never hurt no one, I could see that in his eyes. It's a sad day in this cruel old world when a man can't roam the earth. It makes me wonder what freedom means and what its really worth. Goodbye Arthur Lee, I'm sorry for what they've done. Though it always seems to happen when they give a man a gun. Although he had no family his heart was like apple pie. He always had a joke for me with a gleam in his eye. I asked him once how he felt about this crazy old game called life. He just smiled and shook his head and said, "Man, it cuts like a knife." Goodbye Arthur Lee, I'm sorry for what they've done. Though it always seems to happen when they give a man a gun. So what does all this mean? What the hell am I singing about? If you take a trip to Arthur's grave, I'm sure that will spell it out. Just a little piece of stone lying next to a tree. Although it's hardly seen by no one else but me. Goodbye Arthur Lee, I'm sorry for what they've done. Though it always seems to happen when they give a man a gun....
